Responses to the book

I receive a great many emails from people who have read and enjoyed the book and it gives me real pleasure to read them and then exchange a few emails.  I thought I would share some of people’s responses as they are funny, touching and inspiring in their own right:

I just thought that I would let you know how much I enjoyed your book.  I enjoyed it so much that it is actually in the number one position of books I have enjoyed in the last 20 years.  I believe that the strength of the book is the fact that it is not a comfortable read” – Ken

Reading your book has inspired me to look for my next adventure” – Nicola

Let me just say at times wasn’t an easy read beacuse you told your powerful story with such hosesty I often had to put the book down” – Trish

My wife wrote to you recently. She “forced” me to read your book. Trying to be a good husband I reluctantly obliged. I have just finished the book and am very grateful to her for making me read it and to you for writing such a marvelous story. I have lived all 51 years of my life in SA but you opened my eyes to so many aspects of this country and it’s peoples that I never knew about. I think all South Africans (especially whites) should read your book. That would go a long way to improving race relations. I also think it should be one of the recommended matric text books in all schools.” – Clive

I have wanted to write to you each day, as when I finish a chapter, I feel this need to talk to you about it. It’s strange – everything is written with such honesty that I feel as though I am reading a letter from a friend, and am compelled to ask you questions, to know more, and to tell you how amazing your journey has been (I promise I’m not a stalker, that’sjust a compliment about the way you have written)” – Kerri

Thank you for a book that certainly opened my eyes and one that brought me that much closer to a country I no long live in but one that I will always love” – Heather

Firstly thank you for sending me to a journey ofunderstanding not only my country, but also the culture that I once had a sneek view of.I always could not understand the complexitiies of the black culture, because I was too overpowered by my own upbringing. Thank you once again for allowing me into your life and reminding me from where I came” – Veena

I was given this book as a birthday present earlier this year and i had goosebumps reading the first few pages. The way you described your call to go beyond your borders and make a difference, verbalised my own pull to Africa” – Andrea

I finished your book last night and there is no fairytale ending just real raw emotion” – Lisa

“I am so grateful that I chose this book to read, having grown up in South Africa as a privileged white girl, I was educated through your book, about what really was happening in my country. Thank you so much for also explaining how we were kept from the truth, it was only once I started work with 15 black staff members that I began to learn about the hardships they were living and that was in the new South Africa. Your book was one I found incredibly hard to put down, grasping on every word and wanting to learn more. I will be recommending this book to anyone in Australia wanting to learn more about S.African culture as well as white South African’s, a must do read. Having grown up in Kwa-Zulu Natal and having migrated to Australia 10 years ago, I loved being reminded of the beauty of S.Africa and the African culture and its people!! Thank you!!!” – Megan
