I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m reading a book I like, I
google the author. Its not voyeurism, its just that after a few hundred
pages, they somehow feel like a friend, someone I’d like to catch up
with, see what’s new. So if you’re like me, I hope you enjoy this site.
Friends are welcome.
I’ve left a photo album on the virtual coffee table. The editors felt
there shouldn’t be too many photos in the book and so you may want to
put some faces to names, or visualise some of the places I’ve been.
My book Holding
up the Sky wasn’t meant to win a Pulitzer prize, to stand
up under the critics’ scrutiny – it was just a story I thought should
be told. I had the rare privilege to live in one of the most intriguing
countries on earth and spend time with its magnificent people. I learnt
about the joy of being part of a vibrant community working passionately
for an ideal. I also learnt that with deep joy comes pain, relentless
and inevitable. One reviewer said my book was not a comfortable read
– well I’m not surprised. In a place like South Africa, people are not
cushioned from life’s harshness but in my experience, they also are
open to more of life’s pure joy.
So if you’d like to sit for a while and ponder life, share stories and
marvel at the world we live in, pull up a chair.
